Back from Vacation

I've just returned from a couple of weeks in a remote corner of Alaska. That is, in the Wrangell--St. Elias National Park and Preserve, where my family owns land in an inholder subdivision. The photo above is of my friend Rusty who accompanied me during his first visit to Alaska. He's standing in front of the Kennicott Glacier near McCarthy, which is about 10 miles from the subdivision. The old Kennecott Copper Mine can barely be seen in the background on the right.

We're going to build a cabin on our lot, and one of this summer's chores in preparation was to clean up a mess the bears made of stuff they pulled out of our storage shed. Here's a bear-mauled plastic bottle of Clairol hair conditioner. The bears found it irresistible.

Hey David do you know any rock hounds in Wrangell? I collect a unique mineral form called glendonite ( that occurs in Wrangell and would love to acquire a sample or two. Regards, Leo

Afraid I don't know any rock hounds in the Wrangells, at least yet. My dad was a rock hound, had his own saws and tumblers, and I have a few of his specimens on my bookshelf. I have found a nice hunk of red jasper on the Copper River. I've never seen glendonite, and after looking it up online I don't think I could miss it if I saw it. What an unusual mineral. I wish I had a specimen myself.

It proves that bears are absolutely gaga for the notion of properly conditioned fur. Say what you will about Omega 3, but bears know that if you want a coat with nice sheen and gloss you sometimes have to rely on the aid of something a bit more proactive than a fish and berry diet!
